Home Page The 2011 Master of Urban Planning, Design and Development class at the Levin College of Urban Affairs at Cleveland State University worked throughout the Spring semester to determine the impacts of the National Heritage Area designation on Northeast Ohio and to develop strategies and recommendations for the future of the corridor.
Background The Ohio & Erie Canal become a National Heritage area in 1996 through an act of Congress. The Heritage area stretches 110 miles from Cleveland to New Philadelphia. We focused on the 46 miles between Akron and Lake Erie. However, the original canal was 308 miles long, stretching from Cleveland to Portsmouth on the Ohio River.
