ABOUT THE CENTER
Established in February 2018, Cleveland State University’s Center for Public & Nonprofit Management integrates several functions within the Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs – connecting professional development, student enrichment, and community engagement opportunities.

Remembering Sen. Grace L. Drake
It is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to Senator Grace L. Drake. Senator Drake was a champion for our College and students.

In 2001, after spending 16 and a half years in the Ohio Senate and being term limited, Sen. Drake founded the Ohio Center for the Advancement of Women in Public Service, inspiring students to dedicate their lives to public service. Since then, her Center's Mentoring Program matched nearly 1,000 Levin College students with mentors. Additionally, Sen. Drake served as the inspiration for the newly created Women's Leadership Series.

To honor Sen. Drake, we are dedicating our 2021 mentoring and women's leadership programming in her memory. She worked tirelessly to advocate for our public service and education programs, and we will work to ensure her legacy lives on thanks to the support of our mentors, volunteers, and partners.

INTERNSHIPS + FELLOWSHIPS
Congratulations to MPA students Anton Krieger and Tariq Mohammed for receiving project placements as we launch the Local Government Fellowship Program.

Organizations enrolled in Public Management Academy cohort 5 were invited to pitch process-improvement projects to the Center’s team. The team awarded two Public Management Academy projects the opportunity to host high-achieving Levin College students for Spring 2021. The Center seeks to bridge the gap between the academic and real-world components of Urban Affairs. The fellowship program will provide students with
the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in their fields of interest, while providing Public Management Academy project assistance. The fellows will participate in professional development training and community engagement activities.
Anton Krieger will work with Mayor Annette Blackwell (City of Maple Heights), Steve Kilo (HR Director, City of Strongsville), and Ghazala Ahmad to complete a resource manual for newly elected officials. This project is part of the Public Management Academy - a component of the Ohio Certified Public Manager® Program.

Anton Krieger is a Master of Public Administration (MPA) student with a focus in economic development and city management. Anton has attended Cleveland State University since he was an undergrad where he triple-majored in History, Political Science, and Social Studies. Along the way, he has worked on political campaigns since 2018 - including his own when he ran for city council in North Royalton in 2019. While most of his experience is in public policy and state politics, Anton has a passion for land conservation and stormwater mitigation and plans to pursue environmental law after his MPA.
Tariq Mohammed will assist Rajiv Chokshi, Angelia Green, and Elena Grigore (Cleveland State University staff) with a process improvement project streamlining the GoBabyGo scheduling system. This project is part of the Public Management Academy - a component of the Ohio Certified Public Manager® Program.

Tariq Mohammed is a Master of Public Administration (MPA) student from Bedford Heights. Tariq is pursuing the city management track. An aspiring public official, Tariq finds fulfillment in volunteering. As a change agent, Tariq works full-time with AmeriCorps in Cleveland schools. Tariq finds motivation in building relationships with others and learning about their experiences, while creating sustainable change. In his free time, Tariq enjoys exercising, listening to podcasts, and watching sports.
Internship Sucess Stories
Congratulations, Spring 2021 Interns!
Congratulations to all Levin College students who received Spring 2021 internship placements. Pictured above is Jeanne Merchant. Jeanne is an organizational leadership major, and will intern at Leadership Medina County this semester. Her work will focus on launching a health & wellness education program for the organization.

We're so proud of our interns, and look forward to celebrating your accomplishments this semester and beyond.
Meet Karan'Ja Williams!

Karan’Ja - an undergraduate student studying nonprofit administration - worked remotely as the data analyst intern at the Presidents’ Council from May to September 2020.

According to Karan'Ja, "it was enlightening to learn about the budget of the organization compared to the volume and quality of production the organization provides in supporting small business and rising leaders that are vital to our local economy."

Meet Amanda Houdeschell!
Amanda worked remotely as the Fund Development Intern at the Girl Scouts of North East Ohio during the fall semester.

When asked what she learned during her internship, Amanda noted she perfected her fundraising and development skills she learned in the classroom. "I didn't have any experience with donor databases until this internship, but now I can add DonorPerfect to my skillset if I apply for any fundraising positions in the future," Amanda stated. "I also had never worked with SharePoint before, so now I will be prepared to use it if any of my future positions require experience with the software."

Stay tuned for more information about our upcoming Diversity & Inclusion continuing education course this spring: Diversify Your Social Capital.

The ability to form and hold meaningful, inclusive, and diverse associations and relationships is a skill that has increased exponentially in value. While the racial and civil unrest of 2020 strongly highlighted the value of diversified social capital, many people (as well as organizations) realized this part of their skillset was underperforming or worst, nonexistent. In this course, Jejuana C. Brown (Certified Diversity Professional) shares how to diversify your social capital portfolio through allyship and by amplifying equity and inclusion in your personal and professional relationships.

Jejuana C. Brown is the Director of Equity & Inclusion Programs at
Greater Cleveland Partnership (GCP). She is responsible for cultivating engaging and forward-thinking diversity and inclusion programming including the annual Inclusion Conference and IGNITE, a program for racial equity action planning. Jejuana also develops and leads workshops as well as presents at conferences on topics including board diversity, inclusive leadership, and equity and inclusion in the workplace. Prior to joining GCP, Jejuana managed strategic projects and relationships for several departments at Cleveland State University (CSU). Jejuana has earned a Bachelor of Nonprofit Administration, a Master of Education in Adult Learning and Development, and a graduate certificate in diversity management from CSU.  An active community member, Jejuana serves on the board and is chair of the governance committee for the Journey Center for Safety & Healing.
ABOUT THE WOMEN'S LEADERSHIP SERIES
The Women's Leadership Series (Women Empowering Women) officially launched in October 2018 under CPNM and the Ohio Center for the Advancement of Women in Public Service.

After serving in the Ohio Senate for over 16 years, Senator Grace L. Drake founded the Ohio Center for the Advancement of Women in Public Service in 2001 at the Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs. Senator Drake established the Center in hopes of inspiring more women to pursue public sector careers.

The Women's Leadership Series was created to engage and empower public and nonprofit sector leaders throughout Northeast Ohio, while promoting the concept of gender representation at all levels of leadership. The theme - "Women Empowering Women" - hones in on the notion that women should support, empower, and mentor one another. The series' programming is strategically designed to capitalize on this theme of empowerment within sectors where political pressures are at play, resources remain tight, and the competition to rise to executive leadership endures.
Thank you to the Wenk Family Charitable Foundation for

sponsoring this series!
