>>Levin Forum Commemorates Glenville Riots
The rain came pouring down, but that didn't stop folks from attending the Levin College for the Truth and Reconciliation Forum held yesterday at the College. This forum was intended as a commemoration of the Glenville Riots, which occurred 50 years ago this summer. The event featured local individuals involved in the incident as well as police officers and elected officials who spoke about the riots and their aftermath.
The panel, which was moderated by Lee Fisher, dean of CSU's Cleveland Marshall College of Law, featured Edward P. Kovacic, retired chief of the Cleveland Police Department, former Plain Dealer reporter Dick Peery and former Cleveland City Councilman Jeff Johnson. It also included Glenville residents Chenoa Miller and Norma Freeman, and Sergeant Vincent Montague, president of Black Shield, the African-American Cleveland police union. The event closed with a presentation by Andrew Collins and Jameel McGee, authors of "Convicted: A Crooked Cop, an Innocent Man, and an Unlikely Journey of Forgiveness and Friendship," who spoke of truth and forgiveness as the way communities can move past the mistakes of the past and heal.
"This ongoing discussion is necessary to help us as a community better understand the divisions, discrimination, and similar existing social conditions to those surrounding the Glenville uprising, come to terms with the legacy of our past, and create a safe environment that promotes collective healing," says Levin College professor Ronnie Dunn, CSU's interim chief diversity officer and organizer of the event. In an interview on WKSU, Dr. Dunn "says he hopes the forum will 'jumpstart' a much-needed dialogue about police-community relations." To listen to the WKSU interview, click here.

It's exciting to work on affordable housing and public transportation policy with some of the best and smartest individuals in the area."

>>Levin Research Fellow Speaks on Youth Migration
In a recent article in the Christian Science Monitor titled "How young liberals' moves to Red America may temper political divides," Jim Russell, a senior research fellow at the Center for Population Dynamics at Levin College, addresses the trend of youth exodus from top-tier cities and warns against conflating population change with inward migration i.e., a growth in a city's population of 20-somethings could simply be local teenagers moving into a new age category.

Congratulations to Levin College Professor Joseph Mead for his successful efforts to bring Levin College/Cleveland State University into the ENACT Network. Launched in 2015, ENACT: The Educational Network for Active Civic Transformation is a national program engaging undergraduates at colleges and universities in state-level legislative change by learning to work with legislators, staffers, and community organizations to advance policy. It is becoming a major voice in addressing challenges to American democracy by engaging young people around the country in civic activism built on knowledge, cooperation, justice, and integrity. In the program, students learn through direct engagement in this work, traveling to the state capital, meeting with and lobbying legislators, strategizing with advocacy organizations, and creating outreach materials to advance their chosen issues. ENACT brings the commitment to citizen participation embodied by Supreme Court Justice Louis D. Brandeis to students and organizations engaged in state-level legislation across the United States.
