Brendan Pillar, ‘06 MUPDD, a City Planner with the City of New York Department of City Planning since 2006 was presented with an Outstanding Achievement award in March 2012 for ‘outstanding work and significant achievement at the Department of City Planning.’” 

Holly Whisman, ‘07 BA and ‘09 MSUS Levin graduate, accepted a position with Mecklenburg County in January, and is also in the dissertation phase of her PhD in public policy at UNC Charlotte.

Aja Brooks, MPA ’08, JD/MPA 10’, is working as a legislative policy aide for Senator Rob Portman. 

Glenn Coyne, BA ’84, as well as a MA in City Planning from Georgia Tech ’87, was inducted as a member of the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Certified Planners at this year's National Planning Conference on April 15 in Los Angeles, California.  planning.org/faicp/index.htmGlenn was recognized in community service, and leadership. 

Renee Constantino, MPA '11, has been selected into the Management Development Program (MDP) at the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (GCRTA).  

Jarrett B. Davis, PhD Candidate, Urban Studies & Public Affairs, has been accepted as public policy fellow in the Cuyahoga County Public Policy Fellowship Program.  


Faculty and Staff News

1) Forthcoming this summer is the fourth edition of Introduction to Urban Studies. being published by Kendall-Hunt in Dubuque, Iowa. Editors are Roberta Steinbacher and Virginia O. Benson. Levin College authors of the various book chapters include Steinbacher and Benson, and Mittie Davis Jones, Sanda Kaufman, Dennis Keating, Michael Tevesz, Winifred Weizer, Claudette Robey, and James Robey

2) The Center for Public Management and NODIS collaborated on studies for the Cleveland Public Library, as part of the library's strategic planning process. The Center for Public Management completed a "Fiscal Review of the Cleveland Public Library and Scan of State and National Trends in Library Funding." Authors are Claudette Robey, Kevin O'Brien, Kyle Julien, Ph.D., and Scott Winograd. The NODIS study, entitled "Demographic and Socioeconomic Conditions and a Patron Borrowing Analysis of Cleveland Public Library Branch and Main Libraries," was authored by Mark Salling, with assistance from Jim Wyles, Ellen Cyran, and Sharon Bliss.

3) Ben Clark presented his health care research at the CWRU/MetroHealth Center for Health Care Research and Policy. The talk was titled: "Health Neighborhood, Healthy Neighbor?: Do the Balance Food Options in a Neighborhood Affect Health Outcomes?" A link to their web site is here: chrp.org/seminars_past.asp.

4) The outcomes and findings of the studies prepared by The Center for Public Management and NODIS for the Cleveland Public Library were presented on two occasions to library staff and trustees. The first presentation was on March 27th to library management and staff. Presenting on the "Fiscal Review of the Cleveland Public Library and Scan of State and National Trends in Library Funding" were Claudette Robey and Kevin O'Brien. Mark Salling presented the results of the study titled "Demographic and Socioeconomic Conditions and a Patron Borrowing Analysis of Cleveland Public Library Branch and Main Libraries." Claudette and Kevin also presented the results of the fiscal review on April 17th to the Cleveland Public Library Board of Trustees Finance Committee. The results of the study suggest that the library has successfully mitigated impacts from the economic recession due to strong leadership, adequate revenues, controlled expenditures, and frugal financial management of cash reserves.

5) Professor Alan Weinstein is on sabbatical this semester, but has been busy with speaking and writing engagements. In early January, he was one of three speakers on a panel that discussed the impact of the federal Religious Land Use & Institutionalized Act on state and local governments at the Association of American Law Schools Conference in Washington DC. The other members of the panel were Prof. Douglas Laycock, University of Virginia School of Law and Prof. Marcie Hamilton, Cardozo Law School of Yeshiva University.  Prof. Weinstein and the other panelists used their presentation as the basis for articles that will be published later this year in Fordham Urban Law Journal. In February, an article Alan co-authored with Prof. Richard McCleary a Criminologist at UC-Irvine, was published in the Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Review.  The article, titled "The Association of Adult Businesses with Secondary Effects: Legal Doctrine, Social Theory, and Empirical Evidence" is available at: cardozoaelj.com.

6) Iryna Lendel received news that the Ohio Manufacturers' Association will continue funding her project entitled "The Status of Ohio's Steel Industry."

Dr. Ronnie Dunn has been extremely busy, here are some things he has recently been involved with:

  1. In the university’s new publication “Engaged Scholarship” Dr. Dunn’s research on racial profiling and the use of traffic cameras in the city of Cleveland to reduce bias in traffic ticketing was highlighted on page 18.
  2. He also traveled to Washington DC as part of a 3 person Ohio delegation meeting with Congresswoman Marcie Kaptur and Sen. Sherrod Brown to lobby their support for the "End Racial Profiling Act."  The trip was sponsored by the Rights Working Group.
  3. On Friday April 20th Dr. Dunn was a panelist for the 4th Annual: Fair Housing Forum sponsored by the Government Attorneys section of the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association. The forum examined community reentry for ex-offenders and his presentation is entitled, "Framing the Issue: Mass Incarceration, Reentry, and Collateral Sanctions - How Did We Get Here." 
  4. As part of the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association Lawyers without Rights Series, Dr. Dunn gave a presentation entitled "Racial Profiling:...And Justice for All?"
  5. Lastly, Dr. Dunn was asked to speak to the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers Task Force on the Restoration of Rights and Status After Conviction regarding collateral sanctions for ex-offenders returning to the community.

Introduction to ArcGIS I (Geographic Information Systems)

May 16, 17 and 18, 2012

The Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs is offering an introductory ArcGIS workshop. This three-day workshop is taught by Jim Wyles, a certified GIS Professional (GISP). Classes will be held on May 16-18, 2012 from 8:30 A.M.-12:30 P.M. in the GIS computer lab (Room 40) at the Levin College of Urban Affairs at Cleveland State University located at 1717 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio 44115.

 This course introduces participants to ArcGIS and its component applications. Participants learn how to use ArcMap, ArcCatalog, and ArcToolbox and explore how these applications work together to provide a complete GIS software solution. The course covers fundamental GIS concepts as well as how to create, edit, and work with georeferenced spatial data.

 Participants become familiar with the ArcGIS graphical user interface (GUI), and learn how to manipulate tabular data, query a GIS database, and present data clearly and efficiently using maps and charts. Workshop materials, including a workbook and data CD, are provided. Upon
 successful completion of the workshop certificates are awarded.

CSU discounts are available (regular price is $800)
*$250 for currently enrolled students
*$391 for Faculty and Staff (staff development funds welcome)

 (Note: Priority is given to attendees paying the full price. In the event that an attendee paying the discounted rate is bumped he/she will receive a refund.) Space is limited, so early registration is
 encouraged. No experience with desktop mapping or GIS technology is  required, but registrants should know how to use Windows-based software.
