Levin People in The News

The shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown by police in Ferguson, Missouri, has drawn attention to racial disparities between the community and law enforcement there. Though Ferguson is mostly African-American, all but a few police officers are white. Ferguson is hardly alone in having that kind of imbalance, including some Northeast Ohio agencies. Levin College's Dr. Ronnie Dunn addresses this issue in the following news stories.

ALS Association Northern Ohio Chapter
has raised $270,000 between July 29, when the challenge went viral, and now, said spokeswoman Mary Wilson Wheelock. That's way up from the $66,000 raised during the same period last year. Levin's own Dr. Stuart Mendel, director for Nonprofit Policy & Practice at Cleveland State University, is quoted in this article.

Dr. Mark Salling
, a Levin College Fellow and the Director of the Northern Ohio Data and Information Service will be presenting at the GIS-Pro 2014 Annual Conference of the Urban and Regional Information Systems Association on September 10th in New Orleans. He will be presenting, "The Racially and Socioeconomically Disparate Impact of Relocating the Hamilton County, Ohio Board of Elections". For more information on the GIS-Pro 2014 Annual Conference, click here.

Dr. Salling and colleague Norman Robbins
also undertook research several years ago that was recently cited by the federal judge who's just overturned the Ohio state legislature's limitations to early voting. The research cited:

Norman Robbins and Mark Salling, Racial and Ethnic Proporttions of early in-person votersin Cuyahoga County, General Election 2008 and Implications for 2012, available at

More recent research Dr. Salling undertook for Cuyahoga County on the issue was also used in the judge's decision. In deciding the motion, the Court duly considered: the briefs, authorities, and evidence submitted by the Parties; their arguments at the hearing; the briefs and exhibits submitted by Amici Curiae of the Ohio General Assembly, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, and the Ohio Senate Democratic Caucus and the Ohio House Democratic Caucus; and the statement of interest of the United States.
