The first phase focused on research and survey/interview/community meeting protocol development, in addition to conducting a depth team-based on research, analysis, public engagement and coordination with clients. The Planning Studio hosted guest speakers from a variety organizations identified as being involved with planning for the study area. These speakers generously offered their perspectives and recommendations on this project. Research was completed on a number of topics to create a foundation for the plan. An overall mission and essential task list was derived from this phase.
The secondary phase focused on advancing the mission of the project and essential tasks that derived from Phase I. Studio planners formed into new teams with the objective to synthesize research and public engagement to create effective plans in accordance with the overall mission of the project. Each team created a list of planning and site recommendations specific to their topics, with supporting deliverables.
In the last phase, students focused on their efforts on compiling recommendations and deliverables created in Phase II into the production of the finalized “Eastside Parks: Connection, Activation, Community” planning report. The Final Report document is located on the ‘Home’ page of the website. Studio planners created the Final Report, a presentation, and website and planned an event to present the final study area plan to the public via webinar (the full presentation can be viewed on the ‘Presentation’ page of this website).
As Part of Phase I, studio planners gathered input from key stakeholders who were identified as having a vested interest in the neighborhood’s success. As a group, students identified 27 different stakeholders from a diverse set of backgrounds including officials from City of Cleveland, selected UCI and Famicos board members and staff, other government and institutional partners, local neighborhood organizations, and real estate professionals. Each of the stakeholders were carefully selected to ensure diverse input provided from multiple perspectives. Prior to interviewing stakeholders, the survey documents were reviewed by the CSU Institutional Review Board—a committee of faculty who ensured proper design protocols and procedures for research with human subjects.
A public survey was conducted in two locations; Cleveland Public Library - Langston Hughes and Dave’s Market. Meant to engage area residents and non-resident community members, the survey questions pertained to perceptions, ideas and suggestions regarding the usage and future development of the area. The participation in this survey was anonymous and voluntary and the CSU IRB reviewed the survey process and instruments..
Initially, Studio Planners anticipated interacting with the community at large during two community meetings held by the Famicos Foundation. Although they were able to attend the first meeting, the second meeting was canceled due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
In keeping with Ohio Governor Mike DeWine’s “Stay at Home” order, which effect at midnight on March 23, 2020, CSU Campus buildings locked and swipe card access was disabled until further notice. Remote learning began as scheduled on March 23 and CSU provided students with the resources needed to fully access remote learning. The Planning Studio UST 611 instructors and class steering committee members Dave Baas, Rachel Price arranged for the course to be conducted through Microsoft Teams.
